Google Cloud TTS on the Free Plan — Neural2 and WaveNet Voices
Neural2 and WaveNet voices are available to all Sonna users — no subscription needed. Here's what's included, character limits, and supported languages.
Not every TTS use case requires a premium subscription. Sonna's Free plan includes access to Google Cloud TTS — specifically the Neural2 and WaveNet voice families — at no cost, giving new users a fully functional text-to-speech experience from the moment they sign up.
This article explains what's included in free TTS access, the limits that apply, and when it makes sense to upgrade.
What the Free Plan Includes
The Free plan provides 10,000 credits per month with Google Cloud TTS as the only available generation feature. Image, video, and music generation are locked to paid plans, but TTS works out of the box.
Both Google Cloud TTS model families — Neural2 and WaveNet — are available at no cost to Free users.
At 0.50 credits per character, 10,000 monthly credits translates to up to 20,000 characters of speech per month — roughly 15–20 minutes of narration depending on your average text length.
Neural2 vs WaveNet
Both Neural2 and WaveNet are Google Cloud TTS technologies, but they differ in architecture and language support.
Neural2
Neural2 uses a newer, higher-fidelity synthesis architecture that produces more natural-sounding speech compared to older TTS systems. The voices exhibit more natural prosody, with better handling of sentence rhythm and emphasis.
Supported languages (11 total): English (US, UK, AU), Spanish (US, ES), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (BR), Dutch
Character limit per request: 3,000 characters (platform cap), but Free plan users are limited to 1,000 characters per request — this limit is enforced server-side.
WaveNet
WaveNet is Google's original deep neural network TTS model. It still produces high-quality, natural-sounding speech and adds broader language support beyond what Neural2 covers.
Extended language support includes: Indonesian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Turkish, Polish, Hindi, Thai, Vietnamese, and more — in addition to the languages Neural2 supports.
WaveNet is the better choice when you need a language not covered by Neural2, particularly for Asian and Eastern European languages.
Both models share the same credit cost: 0.50 credits per character.
Character Limits Explained
There are two character limits to understand:
| Limit | Value | Applied To |
|---|---|---|
| Platform max per request | 3,000 chars | All paid plans (Neural2/WaveNet) |
| Free plan max per request | 1,000 chars | Free plan users only |
| Monthly credit allowance | ~20,000 chars | Free plan (10,000 cr ÷ 0.50 cr/char) |
The 1,000-character-per-request limit on the Free plan is enforced at the server level — requests exceeding this limit will return an error. This is separate from your monthly credit balance.
For context, 1,000 characters is approximately 150–200 words, or about a 45–60 second narration at a natural speaking pace. That's enough for short announcements, product descriptions, or educational snippets.

Getting Started Without Paying
Getting started with Google Cloud TTS on Sonna requires only a free account:
- Sign up at sonnalabs.app — no credit card required
- Navigate to Creative → Text to Speech
- Select a voice from the voice library — Neural2 and WaveNet voices are labeled with their provider
- Type or paste your text (up to 1,000 characters per request on the Free plan)
- Click Generate
Your 10,000 monthly credits reset at the start of each billing cycle. Free credits do not carry over — unused credits expire at the end of the month.
Practical Use Cases for Free TTS
Learning and experimentation: The Free plan is ideal for exploring different voice options, comparing Neural2 and WaveNet, and understanding how prompt wording affects prosody — all without spending anything.
Short-form content: Product descriptions, app notifications, short educational clips, podcast intros — anything under 1,000 characters per segment works well within the Free plan constraints.
Multilingual projects: If you're working with Indonesian, Chinese, or other languages where Neural2 support is limited, WaveNet on the Free plan provides a no-cost entry point for those language outputs.
Prototyping: Developers evaluating Sonna for a TTS integration can prototype and test with Google Cloud TTS on the Free plan before committing to a paid plan for ElevenLabs or Gemini access.
When to Upgrade
The Free plan is intentionally limited to Google Cloud TTS. If any of the following apply to your use case, a paid plan will give you significantly more capability:
- You need more than 1,000 characters per request — Pro/Max raises this to 3,000 for Neural2/WaveNet and up to 40,000 for ElevenLabs Flash v2.5
- You want ElevenLabs voices — Eleven v3, Multilingual v2, or Flash v2.5 require Pro/Max or PAYG
- You want Gemini TTS — Google's most expressive TTS option, available on paid plans
- You need image, video, or music generation — none of these are available on the Free plan
- You want API access — building applications with the Sonna API requires Pro/Max or PAYG
Pro plan at Rp139,000/month gives you 102,000 credits, full TTS model access, image generation, music generation, and API keys. Max plan at Rp232,000/month provides 187,000 credits for higher-volume workflows.
If you prefer not to commit to a monthly subscription, PAYG credits start at 62,500 credits for Rp94,000 — one-time purchases that don't expire at month-end.
